Inspired by the true story of a group of hackers who consumed Code Red for 48 hours straight in an attempt to destroy an Internet virus, our “corporate” Code Red site has been commandeered by a covert group of Dew loyalists bent on “taking over the world” in the name of Mountain Dew Code Red. Upon arriving at the site, users are surprised by the digital deterioration of the homepage, followed by cryptic messages that serve as links to deeper interactive content. To seed the buzz, we created rich media ad units on gaming sites like IGN and UGO which digitally implode on the page to reveal the hackers’ rallying call to potential recruits. Within a few weeks of the site launch, Dew fans showed their intrigue about the Code Red virus through speculation on blogs and ARG sites.
